Here’s how to make my family’s super simple Dutch pancake recipe. The Dutch pancake is one of my toddler’s favourite breakfast recipes and he fondly refers to it as the giant pancake.

You may also have heard the Dutch pancake called a baby pancake, but I’m not sure why as it certainly isn’t small!

My husband and I love this Dutch pancake recipe just as much as our toddler considering it utilizes only 5 ingredients that we always have on hand and allows our two-year-old son to get involved from start to finish.

My husband and I love this Dutch pancake recipe just as much considering it utilizes only 5 ingredients that we always have on hand and allows our two-year-old son to get involved from start to finish. Embrace the messy kitchen and hand over the whisk! Your child will love pouring and mixing ingredients and finally watching the pancake rise in the oven (it does get impressively enormous).

We make our Dutch pancake in our cast iron skillet, as it works perfectly for this recipe, creating the golden brown crispy edge that we love. My husband is arguably obsessed with the cast iron skillet and cooks just about everything in it. You may be hesitant about buying and using one if you don’t already, but it’s a necessary kitchen tool. We aren’t fancy in our kitchen and don’t believe in purchasing a lot of gadgets that only serve one purpose. This is not that. This pan can do it all, and it’s not as hard to clean as you may think (I’ll show you how).

Dutch Pancake Ingredients

  • 6 knobs of butter
  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 6 eggs
  • a splash of vanilla

Optional ingredients: we sprinkle powdered sugar onto our Dutch pancake and add whatever berries we have on hand. You can dress it up however you like. Serve it with a seasonal fruit of your choice, or slather it in maple syrup and dig in.

Dutch Pancake Recipe Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 Fahrenheit
  2. While the oven is heating, add 6 (or so) knobs of butter to your cast iron pan. This doesn’t need to be terribly scientific. Toss it on and spread them out evenly.
  3. In a mixing bowl (or you can use a food processor or blender if you prefer) add 1 cup of flour, 1 cup of milk, 6 eggs, and a splash of vanilla.
  4. Whisk thoroughly, leaving no clumps behind (you cannot overmix this).
  5. Once your oven is ready, remove your hot skillet and pour your batter mixture onto the pan overtop of your now melted butter.
  6. Place it back into the oven and set a timer for 22 minutes.
  7. Remove from the oven and add whatever toppings you like before serving.

Take a peek inside your oven during the cooking process and you’ll be amazed to see how big this pancake gets as the steam escapes! It’s a pretty impressive show considering the effort is minimal.

How To Clean Your Cast Iron Skillet

There’s no need to be intimidated by cooking with a cast iron skillet. Wash your cast iron with soap and water just as you would any other pan, but be sure to dry it immediately. There’s an old wives tale that you should never wash your skillet, but this is actually outdated. These days, modern soap isn’t made with the damaging ingredients that would previously strip your pan.

That being said, don’t soak it or let it sit around while damp as this can cause your skillet to rust. Instead, dry it immediately with Bounty Paper Towels. You can use the same small sheet of Bounty to apply a small amount of vegetable oil to the pan, rubbing in circles until a thin layer is left behind.
